MTBF, mean time between failures, is a reliability metric that measures the average time a repairable asset runs between breakdowns. It is calculated by dividing total operating time by the number of failures over that period. A higher MTBF means the equipment is more reliable and fails less often.
MTTR, mean time to repair, is the average time it takes to repair a failed asset and return it to service, including diagnosis and fixing. It is calculated by dividing total repair time by the number of repairs. A lower MTTR means the maintenance team restores equipment faster.
MTBF measures how often equipment fails (reliability), while MTTR measures how quickly it is repaired (maintainability). Used together they show both how dependable an asset is and how efficiently the team responds. Improving MTBF reduces failures; improving MTTR reduces the impact of each one.
