OEE for tablet presses, fillers and blister lines

On a pharma packaging line, output seldom disappears in one long breakdown. It goes in short jams on the blister machine, in slow running after a format change and in waiting before the next batch can start.

In Fabrico's OEE software, OEE is Availability x Performance x Quality, worked out per machine and per line. Because the three factors are shown apart, a low score tells you whether the line stopped, ran slow or made rejects.

  • Availability: run time against planned production time, with each stop and its length.
  • Performance: how fast the press, filler or blister machine actually ran against its rated speed.
  • Quality: good units against all units, so rejected packs count against the line that made them.
  • Views: per machine and per line, live or for a date range you choose.

To compare tools, see our OEE software comparison.

Downtime tracking for batch changes and cleaning

When a connected machine stops, Fabrico logs the stop with its start time and its length. The operator picks the cause in the app at the line, and downtime by cause ranks the stops that cost each line the most time.

Batch changes and line clearance

Between two batches, the line stops for the product or format change and for line clearance, when the previous batch's materials are removed and the line is checked. These stops are part of the plan, not failures, so operators tag them with their own causes and they are listed apart from breakdowns.

You see how long changeovers and clearance take per line, so you can compare lines and check whether a changed routine brings that time down.

Cleaning stops

Cleaning the equipment between batches or campaigns is expected work. Tagged as cleaning, it stays out of the breakdown figures, while the time it takes on each line is still there to compare.

Micro-stops on blister lines

A blister machine or cartoner that halts again and again, a few seconds each time, loses output that a paper log rarely shows. Fabrico detects these micro-stops automatically and counts them per machine, so the team sees where they pile up.

Our downtime tracking software page shows how stops are recorded and given a cause.

Built-in CMMS for presses, fillers and packaging machines

If a stop turns out to need a repair, maintenance picks it up in the same app. A technician opens a work order from the stop, and the finished job is added to that machine's record.

Preventive maintenance: recurring task templates and an annual PM plan, on a calendar where a task can be dragged to a day the line already stands still for a batch change.

Breakdowns: the emergency flow tracks reaction time, and a push notification reaches the technician's phone.

Technicians: jobs are dragged onto a technician, the app warns about over-allocation, and each technician works from a personal working card.

Spare parts: change parts for blister lines and cartoners and wear parts for presses, with min/max levels, stock-takes and consumption tied to work orders.

Analytics: MTTR and MTBF per machine and the top machines by repair count, so production and maintenance read the same figures.

QR codes: scanning the code on a machine opens its files and repair history.

Machine monitoring on pharma packaging lines

Fabrico takes OEE data straight from the machines, so nobody copies counts from paper after the shift. Each machine is connected in the way it allows, and one line can mix the options:

  • PLC connection: run status, stop signals and counts read from the controller of a tablet press, capsule filler or vial filling line.
  • IoT sensor: added where a machine's controller offers no usable output, for example on an older cartoner or a stand-alone labeling unit.
  • Camera: AI cameras with computer vision count output and catch stops at manual steps, for example where packs are cased by hand.

All of it feeds the same OEE dashboard, however the machine is connected. What each option needs on the machine is set out on our machine monitoring software page.

Audit log, access control and multi-site OEE

Fabrico keeps an audit log of who changed what. Role-based access control gives operators, technicians, quality staff and plant managers the rights their role needs and no more.

Security: data is hosted in the AWS EU region and encrypted at rest and in transit, Fabrico holds ISO/IEC 27001 certification, and a DPA covers GDPR.

Backups: daily, with an RTO and an RPO of 4 hours each, and Cloudflare DDoS protection in front of the platform.

Sign-in: SSO through SAML, set up as a custom integration.

Multi-site: with a group account, all plants of the group appear in a multi-plant view, and one plant can be benchmarked against another in cross-plant comparison reports.

ERP and open data: bidirectional sync with SAP PM, integration with SAP S/4HANA, with Dynamics or Oracle available as a custom integration. A REST API, webhooks, Zapier and Excel or CSV export keep the data usable in your other tools.

Languages: the app is live in English, German, French, Polish and Bulgarian, and other languages can be added.

Questions pharma plants ask about OEE software

Which part of MES does Fabrico cover? The monitoring and OEE part: live machine data, stops and their causes, OEE, and the maintenance behind the stops.

Production planning and scheduling sit on our roadmap, and batch records stay in the systems your plant uses for them today.

How long does it take to roll out? Plan about 1 month to fit and connect the devices, and 3 to 4 months for the full rollout across the plant.

Can our teams use Fabrico on phones? Yes, there are iOS and Android apps and a web version, with push, in-app and email notifications.

Who helps us get started? Your team gets live or on-site training, and email or phone callback support answers in under 2 hours.

What does downtime cost our lines? Our cost of downtime calculator puts a price on your production losses from a few figures, such as revenue, margin and current OEE.

What happens in a demo? It is a 30 minute conversation with a Fabrico consultant, no commitment, about your packaging and filling lines, and anything you share is handled under ISO 27001.
