NFPA 70E Requirements for Electrical Maintenance and CMMS Role

NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace) is the primary US standard governing electrical safety for workers who interact with energized electrical equipment, a category that includes virtually all industrial maintenance technicians.

CMMS supports NFPA 70E compliance in three primary ways. First, maintenance planning: NFPA 70E requires that electrical maintenance tasks be planned with hazard identification completed before work begins.

CMMS work orders for electrical tasks should include arc flash incident energy calculations (or PPE category references), required PPE, energized work permit requirement determination, and applicable LOTO procedure.

Second, equipment documentation: NFPA 70E requires that electrical equipment be labeled with arc flash hazard information, and CMMS can maintain the arc flash study data (incident energy levels, PPE requirements, restricted approach boundaries) for each piece of electrical equipment as part of the asset record.

Third, energized work permit management: NFPA 70E 130.2 requires written energized electrical work permits for justified energized work. CMMS work order workflow should integrate permit generation and approval for any task involving exposure to electrical hazards above 50V.

Arc Flash Documentation and CMMS Asset Records

Arc flash hazard analysis (required under NFPA 70E and documented in IEEE 1584) generates incident energy levels and PPE requirements for every electrical distribution point in a facility, switchgear, motor control centers, disconnect switches, and panels.

This data is typically produced by an electrical engineer or third-party consultant and must be maintained current as electrical systems change.

CMMS is the right repository for arc flash data because it links to the maintenance schedule: arc flash studies require renewal when electrical system modifications occur, and CMMS can trigger re-evaluation requests when electrical system work orders are completed on relevant equipment.

Asset records for electrical equipment in CMMS should include: arc flash incident energy level (cal/cm²), PPE category, restricted and limited approach boundaries, date of most recent arc flash study, and the engineering firm responsible.

CMMS work orders for electrical tasks should pull this data automatically and present it to the technician before work begins, not as an optional field but as a mandatory display in the mobile work order interface.

Maintenance organizations with CMMS-integrated arc flash data consistently demonstrate higher NFPA 70E compliance in safety audits than organizations maintaining arc flash data in separate spreadsheets or engineering drawings.

Energized Work Permit Workflow in CMMS for NFPA 70E

NFPA 70E 130.2(B) requires that energized electrical work permits document justification for energized work, description of the circuit or equipment, description of the work to be performed, arc flash hazard analysis results, PPE required, precautionary measures to limit the extent of the hazard, and signatures of both the worker and authorizing supervisor.

Integrating this permit into CMMS work order workflow eliminates the most common NFPA 70E compliance gap: permit forms that exist as PDF templates but are inconsistently completed and filed.

CMMS work order creation should include a screening question: does this task involve exposure to electrical hazards above 50V?

If yes, the work order should require completion of the energized work permit fields before the job can be assigned to a technician.

The permit approval should require supervisor electronic signature with re-authentication. Completed permits should be retained in the work order record. NFPA 70E does not specify a retention period, but OSHA recordkeeping requirements and good practice suggest minimum 3 years.

CMMS systems with configurable work order workflows that can enforce safety requirements as mandatory fields rather than optional notes deliver significantly better NFPA 70E compliance outcomes than systems where safety documentation is an afterthought.
